"That Night"

“It was that night.” A soft wind ruffled his unkempt hair revealing a tiny half moon shape scar just below his hair line on the right. “I met your Uncle Duo that night.” Heero smiled at the nine-year old sitting at his feet.

“That night?” The girl asked, pushing the metal rim of her glasses up the bridge of her nose. She reminded him of someone and in his mind he knew the images would soon come to engulf him like wild flames.

“I was out on a date,” Heero smiled at her again, “with a girl.”

“Ooooooo!” She teased and pursed her lips, making kissing sounds. “I know what a date is!” She exclaimed.

“Do you?”

“Was she pretty?” Her pigtails bounced in the wind as she tilted her chin toward him.

“She was very pretty, just like you,” Heero answered indulgently. “Her hair was long, just like yours. Except hers was blond.” A floodgate cracked open in him and he couldn’t stop the rush of memories. He thought he could smell the burning tires all over again.

“I haven’t thought about that night for so long now.” Duo squinted in the direction of giant oak tree. The two figures underneath it had their heads together, engrossed in their own little conversation.

“None of us have.” The young woman stole a glance at him from under the rim of her straw hat.

“It was raining, you know,” Duo said. “Not pouring, but just enough to wet the road. It smelt like spring already, that night.” He turned to her, smiling gently and blinking away a strand of flyaway hair in his eye.

“We were going to a movie,” Heero murmured and rubbed his face with his hands.

“Was it a good movie?” The little girl shifted her weight and busied herself plucking the grass underneath her toes.

“We didn’t make it to the theatre.” Heero felt his stomach clenched.

“Oh?” She looked up at him, her glasses glinting in the late summer sun.
“It was raining that night.” Heero swallowed softly.

“He couldn’t have seen us, Sal” Duo kicked the golf-ball size pebbles at his feet. He missed a few and sent a few scrambling into the water. “It was dark and Hilde missed the stop sign.” He smiled ruefully at her.

“He swerved?” Sally asked, pressing down on her straw hat that threatened to fly away.

“He tried,” stopping in his tracks, he turned to her, “but the road was slippery. He didn’t have time. His car did a 180 and side-swiped mine.”

The little girl stood with her back to the sun and the wind. She raised her arms over her head and released the grass she had ‘collected’ from her hands. Some fell to her feet; some floated and flew with the wind.

“Did you have to fix your car? Uncle Heero?” She turned to him.

“I couldn’t.”

“Did you get a new one?” She frowned.

“Later I did.”

“Is it weird?” She fell to her knees in front of him and poked his scar with her fingers. “Is it weird to be Uncle Duo’s boyfriend?”

“It is weird isn’t it?” Duo laughed softly. Sally could tell the weight was gone from his voice. “I hated him for years.”

“It wasn’t his fault.” The straw hat was in her hands now. Her long dark hair rushed to frame her face.

“You know what the funny thing was, Sal?” He picked up a smooth pebble and ran his thumb over it. “I let Hilde drive that night because I wanted to make her happy. I wanted to have sex with her.” With a flick of his wrist, the pebble shot out into the lake, bouncing twice before it sank to the bottom. “It would’ve been my first, you know”

“Mei Mei,” Sally called out as she walked up the grassy slope. “It’s time to go.”

The little girl sprang to her feet. Bending at the waist, she gave the tousled-hair man a tight squeeze with her open arms, and ran toward her mother.

“Hey.” Duo plopped down unceremoniously next to his lover.

“Hey.”

“Are you ok?” He ran a hand down Heero’s arm and squeezed when he came to his elbow.

“Are you?”

Duo didn’t answer, resting his head on Heero’s shoulder instead. He suppressed a shiver when he felt the kiss on the top of his head. Staring into the distance, he knew they would sit here until the setting sun skewed the shadows of the crosses and the stone angels. They would go home then, together.

It’s been five years today.

The End
AN: Mei Mei because in mandarin, mei mei is little sister. In some family, mei mei is often used as a pet name for the littlest daughter in the family. Well guess who Sally married! :P
